Essential items for disaster preparedness in India
Documents (in waterproof pouch)
- Aadhaar card copy
- Ration card copy
- Voter ID / PAN card copy
- Insurance policy documents
- Bank passbook / account details
- Emergency contact numbers (written on paper)
- Passport-size photos
Water & Food
- Drinking water: 3 litres per person per day (minimum 3 days)
- Water purification tablets or liquid chlorine
- ORS packets
- Ready-to-eat food: chivda, dry fruits, biscuits, puffed rice
- Glucose powder/tablets
Medical
- Basic first aid kit
- Prescribed medicines (7-day supply)
- ORS sachets
- Paracetamol
- Antiseptic liquid (Dettol/Savlon)
- Bandages, cotton, adhesive tape
- Anti-diarrheal tablets
Tools & Safety
- Torch/flashlight with extra batteries
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (All India Radio)
- Multi-tool or Swiss knife
- Matchbox/lighter in waterproof bag
- Rope (minimum 10 metres)
- Whistle (to signal for rescue)
- N95 masks
Cash
- Cash in small denominations: Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes
- Keep Rs 2000-5000 minimum
- ATMs and UPI may not work during disasters
Clothing & Shelter
- Rain poncho or plastic sheet
- Warm clothing (if in cold region)
- Sturdy closed-toe shoes
- Mosquito net or repellent
- Tarpaulin sheet for temporary shelter
Communication
- Fully charged power bank
- Mobile phone with emergency numbers saved
- Battery-operated radio
- Written list of emergency contacts
